Georgia’s Achievements at International Olympiads
Tech Olympiads Hub of Georgia
Based on many years of experience and international trust, Business and Technology University, together with its partners and supporters, has founded the Georgian Tech Olympiads Hub — a platform that brings together the existing Olympiad ecosystem in Georgia as one strong center.
The Hub’s goal is to form national teams for the world’s leading Informatics Olympiads, represent the country with dignity in the technology field, prepare and support team members, and achieve the best possible Olympiad results.
The Tech Olympiads Hub ensures the organization of student Olympiads in Georgia, the preparation of national teams, and their participation in international Olympiads. These Olympiads are:
International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI)
European Girls’ Olympiad in Informatics (EGOI)
Within the framework of the Hub, BTU will coordinate the selection of national teams, the training of student members of these teams, and their participation in international Olympiads. The project will contribute to the development of talented youth in the fields of Informatics and Artificial Intelligence, the acquisition of international experience, the strengthening of the innovation ecosystem in Georgia, and will showcase Georgia’s technological education potential on an international scale.
To date, Georgia has won 7 gold, 13 silver, and 43 bronze medals, as well as 2 honorable mentions at the International Olympiad in Informatics; 2 gold, 4 silver, and 3 bronze medals at the European Girls’ Olympiad in Informatics; and 2 gold, 4 silver, and 20 bronze medals at the European Junior Olympiad in Informatics. Georgia also has champions of the European Junior and Central European Olympiads, as well as a champion of the European Girls’ Olympiad.
Olympiad participants today work in global corporations such as Google, Meta, Microsoft, Dropbox, Palantir Technologies, Amazon, Facebook, Databricks, Waymo, and others. Their experience and achievements create a strong technological ecosystem, the further development of which will be elevated to a new level by the Georgia Tech Olympiads Hub at BTU.
History
In Georgia, Olympiad activities in Informatics began in the late 1980s. It was during this period that an intensive system started to take shape, aimed at identifying talented youth and preparing them for international Olympiads, as well as ensuring their participation in these competitions. This involved teaching programming languages and algorithms, and alongside providing appropriate knowledge, fostering strong analytical-logical, critical, and optimal decision-making skills. As a result, it became possible not only to participate in high-level international Olympiads but also to achieve serious success.
In 1990, the gold medal won by Giorgi Datuashvili at the International Olympiad in Informatics became Georgia’s first significant achievement in this field. After that, the Georgian national team won numerous awards at various Olympiads.
During this period, an intensive system was established, aimed at developing students’ algorithmic and programming thinking and providing targeted preparation for international Olympiads.
In 2017, the Association for Supporting IT Education and Informatics Olympiads organized, for the first time at the national level, the All-Georgia Student Olympiad (OLYINFO), which gave motivated students living in the regions the opportunity to develop algorithmic thinking.
